The state distinctions’ system of Moldova will be revised and modernized. A draft law to this effect today was considered by the parliament’s commission for culture, education, research, youth, sports and media.
The legislative initiative introduces a new framework for awarding orders, crosses, medals and honorary titles meant to better reflect contemporary values and recognize various merits in society.
A novel element is the establishment of the Order of Freedom, which will honor contributions to the promotion of democracy, human rights, equality, freedom and pluralism, as well as support for charitable actions and the protection of cultural heritage. At the same time, the Academic Merit medal will be created in two classes, intended for teachers, researchers and scientists with outstanding results in education and research.
Among other major changes, there is the modification of the Glory of Labor Order to the Order of Labor, with a new design and organization into classes. The Military Merit medal will be elevated to the rank of a cross, and the Honor Order will become the Order of Honor. Also, aesthetic adjustments will be made to other distinctions, including the Order of the Republic and the honorary title. People's Artist.
Distinctions will be awarded annually, once, on August 27, Independence Day.
