Moldova’s wine industry adopts new development vision for next five years

The wine sector in the Republic of Moldova will be modernized and oriented toward premium markets in the coming years, after the Government today approved the strategic development vision for the wine sector for 2026–2030.

The document sets out the directions for development and modernization of the wine industry, with the objective of increasing the sector’s competitiveness and resilience in the context of economic and climate challenges, as well as changes in the global wine market.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, the wine sector remains a strategic one for the national economy, contributing approximately 16% to the value of agriculture in the Republic of Moldova. In 2024, wine exports reached 234.7 million dollars, and the industry provides about 150 thousand jobs.

The approved strategy provides for the modernization and restructuring of vineyards in line with market requirements, the development of wines with Protected Geographical Indication and Protected Designation of Origin, as well as the promotion of local grape varieties to differentiate Moldovan products on foreign markets.

At the same time, the document focuses on expanding exports and accessing high value-added market segments, given that approximately 85% of the wine produced in the Republic of Moldova is intended for export. The authorities consider it necessary to diversify external markets and reposition Moldovan wines in the premium segment in order to increase the value of exports and strengthen the country brand.

The vision also includes measures for developing the domestic market, promoting responsible consumption of quality products, as well as implementing sustainable practices and innovation in viticulture and winemaking.

The authorities also highlight the role of wine as an identity and tourism element of the Republic of Moldova, considering that the sector has significant potential for promoting the country’s image internationally.

The implementation of the document will be coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of the Republic of Moldova, in cooperation with the National Office of Vine and Wine and representatives of the private sector.
