VIDEO // Minister of Finance on IMF Agreement: We have agreed on objectives for reducing budget deficit and measures needed for sustainable economic growth

The Republic of Moldova has reached a staff-level agreement with the mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), under which the objectives for reducing the budget deficit and the measures necessary to ensure sustainable economic growth have been agreed. The clarifications were made today by Minister of Finance Andrian Gavriliță.

“We have good news today. We have reached a preliminary understanding with the IMF mission for the next three years. We are clearly setting targets for deficit reduction and the main parameters and measures that we must adopt in order to ensure sustainable economic growth,” the official stated.

At the same time, Andrian Gavriliță specified that in the coming period the fiscal policy will be finalized in line with the new objectives.

“In the next few days, we will finalize the fiscal policy so that we can ensure that Moldova works, that Moldova invests, and that we reduce economic inequalities in our country,” the minister concluded.

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced this morning that the Republic of Moldova and the IMF have reached an agreement on a new cooperation program for the next three years. The Prime Minister emphasized that, for the Republic of Moldova, this result represents a clear signal that international partners consider that our country is moving in the right direction, at a good pace, despite external circumstances that remain complicated.

The decision was announced after an IMF expert team, led by Alina Iancu, visited Chișinău on 7–20 May 2026. The mission held discussions with the authorities following the request for a new program supported through the Policy Coordination Instrument (PCI).
