Wheat exports from Moldova decline due to lower crop quality in 2025

The Republic of Moldova is experiencing a decrease in wheat exports and a slight drop in the average price, a trend caused by the lower quality of this year's production, stated Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Ludmila Catlabuga.

According to the official, recent analyses indicate a reduction in the volume of wheat exported, while the average export price was 3.53 lei/kg, compared to 3.57 lei/kg in 2024.

“This year, we have exported approximately 585 thousand tons of wheat. The difference in price and demand is influenced by quality. While in previous years, the elasticity and dough expansion indicators in baking were better, in 2025 they fell below the usual level, which has affected the competitiveness of our product in the international market,” explained Ludmila Catlabuga.

The official emphasized that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry will continue to prioritize improving the quality of local wheat by supporting farmers in using certified seeds, modern cultivation technologies, and sustainable processing practices.

“The consumer and the buyer, both in the domestic and external market, seek quality. We will continue to work to ensure that the Republic of Moldova offers products that meet the increasingly strict market demands,” stated the minister.

Experts in the field confirm that this year's climatic variations and uneven moisture conditions during the ripening period have influenced the technological parameters of the wheat, indirectly affecting international market prices.

Despite these challenges, the authorities aim to maintain stability in the cereal sector and stimulate the competitiveness of Moldovan agricultural exports.
