EU Parliament's Office in Chisinau to be inaugurated on November 7; European Parliament president to attend event

The European Union Parliament’s Office in Chisinau will be inaugurated next week, on November 7. The event will be attended by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. Vice President of the European Parliament Victor Negrescu has made statements to this effect in an interview given with ziua.md website, during a visit to Moldova.

The European official said that the EU Parliament’s Office in Chisinau represented a new structure through which the European Parliament would support the process of Moldova's accession to the European Union and would facilitate the transposition of European legislation into national legislation.

“It is a very important office that will manage the relationship with Moldova, as well as the relationship with all Eastern Partnership countries. The European Parliament has liaison offices in all member states and only a few outside the EU space. The goal of this representation center is to dialogue with partners at the parliamentary level, to strengthen relationships and to facilitate the transposition of legislation. This initiative has enjoyed the support of Moldova’s parliament. Thus, a structural dialogue will commence between the two parliaments - the specialty commissions of Moldova’s parliament will interact with the specially committees of the European Parliament, in order to transpose legislation and learn how you can participate in European decision-making,” noted Victor Negrescu.

He presented the structure of the European Union Parliament Office, due to be inaugurated in Chisinau.

“The office will initially consist of three people - a Romanian diplomat, who has already been recruited. He has earlier worked at the European Parliament, is already here, and is carrying out activities. We also have two positions available and one of the calls is already open. It is a political position and an administrative position,” noted Victor Negrescu.

The vice president of the European Parliament also referred to the prospects for the development of the office that is to be opened in Chisinau. In the context, the official emphasized that the new office represented “a crucial communication infrastructure” between the two legislatures and the citizens of Moldova with the European structures.

“I wish that, starting from 2027, we increase this office. Now, here in Chisinau, we are working together with the European Commission delegation, the European Union delegation, but we want to have our own space, to conduct information campaigns, especially since we already have quite a good budget in this regard. Parliamentary diplomacy is very important and we have many common projects; that why, I will fight for increasing the budget, enhancing our activity, perhaps more human resources, so that we can show the citizens of Moldova that the European Parliament, which is, in my opinion, the main advocate of Moldova’s accession to the EU, is also a good dialogue partner. This office is a crucial communication infrastructure because it is important for us that the world understands that there is a European Parliament, that Moldova can express itself through this structure, that we will organize more joint actions, we will have information networks, in order to democratize access to European information, without being politicized,” said Victor Negrescu.

The European Parliament has repeatedly supported the European path of Moldova and praised the country's progress on the development agenda and the implementation of reforms. At the same time, the European institution has asked for additional political, financial, and technical support from the EU, in order to strengthen democracy, cybersecurity, support independent media and civil society of Moldova.

Similarly, the European Parliament has encouraged the acceleration of Moldova's integration into the European single market and the implementation of the 1.9- billion-euros-worth Growth Plan for the country's economic development.
