Strategic vision focused on sustainable infrastructure development Moldova
The strategic vision of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development is focused on formulating and promoting public policies with emphasis on the sustainable development of the country's infrastructure. The long-term projects include initiatives that aim to position Moldova as a central transit and logistics point in Eastern Europe.
Airports' Development
One of the main action directions for 2025 is the expansion of the Chișinău International Airport terminal to handle a flow of 5 million passengers annually, surpassing the record figure of 4 million in 2024. The expansion will be complemented by the introduction of modern technologies, such as self-check-in and digital solutions for passport control, enhancing passenger efficiency and comfort. Additionally, there is a focus on integrating CAT III technology for fog landing. Another key objective is the resumption of flights from Mărculești Airport, with plans for runway repair and terminal rehabilitation for summer charter flights.
Railway Reform and Development
The railway sector will undergo deep reform, focusing on reopening important sections for logistic connections with ports in Romania and Ukraine. Projects for 2025 include rerunning two railway lines at Văleni for direct connection with ports, planned for launch in autumn 2025, and reactivating the Fălciu railway, providing quick access to Romanian ports, thus facilitating he transport of goods from Ukraine. The launch of electrification and modernization projects through the UPGRADE CFM Program will bring railway infrastructure up to European standards, increasing efficiency for passenger and freight transport.
Naval Transport Development
Efforts are concentrated on expanding and modernizing the Giurgiulești state port infrastructure, to allow greater freight processing, reduced transit times and increased logistical efficiency, facilitating Moldova's exports and imports for long-term, enhancing national competitiveness in the global market, and aiding integration into international transport and trade networks.
Road Infrastructure
A major issue is the construction of the Ungheni-Ungheni highway bridge, connecting Moldova with Romania's road network. Additionally, feasibility studies for four new bridges over the Prut are underway to significantly improve international connections.
Regional and Local Development
The focus is on implementing over 710 local and regional development projects in the country's localities through the National European Village, Edition II Program. Projects include modernizing water and sewage systems, renovating schools and kindergartens, playgrounds and sports fields and street lighting networks. In the first edition of the program, 496 projects were implemented out of a total of 498 projects approved.
