Speaker provides details on consultations to unblock situation regarding organization of elections for People’s Assembly of Gagauzia
The draft law establishing the specific features of organizing elections for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia Autonomous Territorial Unit is in the finalization stage and will be presented in the coming days. The document is to be discussed with MPs and members of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC). Speaker Igor Grosu made the statement.
According to the official, yesterday, consultations were held at the Presidency on unblocking the situation related to organizing free and fair elections for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, attended by the head of state Maia Sandu, MPs, members of the CEC and of the People’s Assembly.
“We were informed that solutions have been found for almost 95% of what we call the specific features of holding elections to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia. Within a few days, those responsible will come forward with a draft decision that will include these specific provisions. Thus, there will be legal norms applicable throughout the entire territory of the country and for all types of elections, such as: the way in which members of electoral councils and bureaus are appointed. Likewise, all candidates must undergo verification. Electoral rolls and the way candidates are financed are also targeted, because what we found in Gagauzia is that there is no ceiling for cash financing, which is not correct,” said Igor Grosu.
The draft decision, which is to be presented in the coming days, will be examined by members of Parliament and by those of the Central Electoral Commission.
“Subsequently, the process of endorsement within the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia will begin, so that we can have elections this year. This is our plan. We can no longer keep the situation in suspense,” Igor Grosu emphasized.
The working group includes deputies of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, led by Nicolai Ormanji, the acting president of the institution, MPs from the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, representatives of the CEC, as well as a representative of the Presidency.
During the meeting, the working group discussed the fundamental principles that will underpin the organization of the elections – transparency, equality and respect for fundamental human rights. Thus, the shared responsibility of all parties involved is to ensure conditions for a fair ballot in which the inhabitants of the autonomy can freely decide its future. In this regard, the group is in the process of finalizing a set of clear and equitable rules, in full compliance with the national legal framework and with the electoral standards applicable in our country.
