Consultations on organizing elections to People’s Assembly of Gagauzia held at Moldova's Presidency
President Maia Sandu and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu continue consultations on unblocking the situation related to organizing free and fair elections for the People’s Assembly (local legislative body) of the Gagauzia Territorial Autonomous Unit (UTA Gagauzia).
The working group created on this purpose held a meeting at the Presidency today. It includes deputies of the People’s Assembly of UTA Gagauzia, led by Nicolai Ormanji, the acting president of the institution, Moldovan MPs, representatives of the Central Electoral Commission, as well as a representative of the Presidency.
During the meeting, the working group discussed the basic principles that will underpin the organization of the ballot: transparency, equality and respect for fundamental human rights.
The shared responsibility of all parties involved is to ensure conditions for a fair election, in which the residents of the autonomy can freely decide its future. To this end, the group is in the process of finalizing a string of clear and equitable rules, in full compliance with the national legal framework and the electoral standards applicable in Moldova.
