Moldovan cities benefit from European cooperation and funding through URBACT IV Programme
Moldovan cities benefit from new opportunities for European cooperation and funding for sustainable urban development through participation in URBACT IV Programme. The programme facilitates the exchange of experience with European cities, the adaptation of good practices to local needs, and the strengthening of the capacities of local public authorities.
The Republic of Moldova became eligible to participate in the programme in 2023, following the geographical extension approved by the European Commission. Since 2024, cities in the country can participate in European networks and activities and can benefit from dedicated funding.
URBACT National Point within the State Chancellery supports local public authorities in identifying opportunities, preparing applications, and participating in European urban cooperation networks.
The first results are already visible. Edineț municipality and Cimișlia city are implementing projects within transfer networks, jointly benefiting from over 128 thousand euros in European funds for the planned activities. The experience of these two localities shows how good practices developed in other European cities can be adapted to address the challenges of communities in the Republic of Moldova.
The interest of local authorities is growing. In 2026, the Republic of Moldova registered 35 applications under the Call for Action Planning Networks and the URBACT Accelerator for Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
The participation of Moldovan cities in these initiatives contributes to the modernization of local public administration, the development of more efficient urban solutions, and the strengthening of ties with European communities, while supporting the European integration path of the Republic of Moldova.
