Position of Bashkan of Gagauzia declared vacant

During today’s session, MPs of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia declared the position of Bashkan of the Gagauz Autonomous Territorial Unit vacant. The decision was supported by 12 deputies.

The date of the election for the Bashkan has not yet been set. Previously, President of the People’s Assembly Valentin Gaidarji suggested that the vote could be held on the same day as the elections for the new composition of the People’s Assembly, scheduled for November 15.

The position became vacant following the conviction of Evghenia Guțul. On May 28, the Chişinău Court of Appeal (Centru) upheld the sentence against her, by which she was sentenced to seven years in prison for the illegal financing of a political party and for accepting funds from a criminal group led by Ilan Șor.

Evghenia Guțul was detained on March 25, 2025, and on August 5 she was sentenced to imprisonment.

The decision to declare the Bashkan’s position vacant opens the procedure for organizing a new election in the Gagauz autonomy.
