VIDEO // Around 500 town halls adopted voluntary amalgamation decisions

Around 500 town halls in the Republic of Moldova have already adopted final decisions on voluntary amalgamation. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan is urging the remaining local administrations to take advantage of the remaining period and finalize the procedures by August 31.

“If we truly want to change this country for the better, we must have the courage to make not only popular decisions, but also bold decisions, crucial for the future of the Republic of Moldova. I thank all the mayors and local teams who had the determination to move forward. Other town halls are now in a real race against the clock to succeed in merging their administrations by August 31. I urge you to do everything possible to meet this deadline,” the prime minister said.

Vasile Tofan maintains that the reform of local public administration is closely linked to the economic development of communities, and stronger administrations can help attract investment.

“The reform of local public administration is closely linked to economic development. Stronger, more efficient and more professional local administrations will create better conditions for business development, attracting investment and creating value in communities, so that the main beneficiaries of the reform are the people. For this change to succeed, efforts are needed from both sides: local administrations must strengthen their administrative capacity so that the business environment finds it easier to invest and create value at home, while the Government must deliver real fiscal decentralization, leaving a larger share of taxes directly at the local level,” Vasile Tofan noted.

Tofan held a meeting with mayors from the Central region, during which support measures and planned investments for the localities that will complete the voluntary amalgamation process were discussed. The discussions focused on opportunities for infrastructure development and on how the new local administrations will be able to benefit from investments for projects needed by the communities.
