Prime Minister meets with IMF Mission visiting Chișinău
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan met today with the team of experts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Alina Iancu, which is on a working visit to the Republic of Moldova from October 21 to 28.
The discussions focused on recent economic developments, macroeconomic prospects, and the Government's economic policy priorities. Topics included fiscal and budgetary policy, public finance management, structural reforms, the situation in the energy sector and social protection measures, as well as stimulating economic growth and attracting investment.
The official reiterated the Government's commitment to promoting responsible economic policies aimed at ensuring macroeconomic stability, strengthening the sustainability of public finances, and creating a favorable environment for economic development.
“We are counting on sustainable economic growth based on investment, removing barriers to business, stimulating entrepreneurship and competition, increasing productivity, and improving the efficiency of state-owned enterprises, including through privatization where appropriate. Not on growth driven predominantly by unsustainable budget spending. Fiscal discipline and economic development must go hand in hand,” Tofan said.
For her part, IMF mission chief Alina Iancu emphasized the interest in deepening discussions on economic priorities and the reform agenda: “We are pleased to have this opportunity for dialogue with the new Government, to discuss economic policy priorities and reforms, as well as how the IMF can continue to provide support.”
In this context, the parties agreed to maintain an open and constructive dialogue, including by leveraging the IMF's expertise in priority areas for the economic development of the Republic of Moldova.
