Parliament ratifies Agreement between Moldova and Denmark on gainful employment of family members of diplomatic staff
Parliament today ratified the Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the Kingdom of Denmark on the gainful employment of dependent family members of diplomatic mission and consular post staff. The document will allow diplomats’ spouses and, in certain cases, their dependent children to engage in paid activities in the country where the diplomatic staff member is posted.
The ratification bill was presented to the plenary by Dumitru Socolan, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to him, the agreement seeks to facilitate access for family members of diplomatic and consular staff to the labor market of the host country, on the basis of reciprocity.
“These agreements are intended to create mechanisms to ensure that family members of diplomatic mission and consular post staff can be employed in the countries where the respective staff members have been posted. Such agreements ensure the right to work, as provided for by the legislation of the respective states, on the one hand, and contribute to the protection of families, on the other,” said Dumitru Socolan.
The State Secretary noted that the right to engage in paid activities would be granted on the basis of an application and would be valid only for the duration of the diplomatic mission of the family member on whom the applicants are dependent.
“The main purpose of the proposed agreement is to authorize, on the basis of the principle of reciprocity, spouses and, in some cases, dependent children of diplomatic, administrative and technical staff of diplomatic missions and consular posts to engage in employment activities in the country where they have been posted. This right will be granted on the basis of an application and only for the duration of their assignment to the mission,” the official explained.
According to Dumitru Socolan, removing restrictions on the employment of family members will also contribute to the development of their professional skills.
The agreement is expected to strengthen the bilateral legal framework between the Republic of Moldova and the Kingdom of Denmark and contribute to the development of cooperative relations between the two states.
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Kingdom of Denmark were established on January 20, 1992.
To date, the countries have signed six international treaties regulating the following areas: the establishment of diplomatic relations, international road transport of passengers and goods, technical cooperation, environmental protection, readmission, and visa facilitation.
