President on Dniester Day in Moldova
Today, 25 May Moldova marks Dniester Day – a day dedicated to the protection and appreciation of one of the country’s most important rivers, which provides drinking water for about 80% of Moldova's population. On this occasion, head of state Maia Sandu delivered a message urging citizens to protect Dniester and environment.
“Throughout the centuries, people from both banks of Dniester have tied their fate to its waters – for food, agriculture and daily life. This day is also a call to responsibility. Pollution and deforestation endanger the country's water resources. Therefore, it is our shared responsibility to protect Dniester for a cleaner environment and for our health and the future generations,” Maia Sandu said.
Dniester Day is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of May, according to a decision approved by the Government of the Republic of Moldova in 2013. On this occasion, a series of photos dedicated to the Dniester River, taken by Moldovan photographer Maxim Chumash, have been displayed on the presidential fence.
