Passed by Parliament: Moldovans working in Slovakia to be eligible for pensions and other social benefits
Citizens of the Republic of Moldova who are working or have worked in the Slovak Republic will be eligible for pensions and other social benefits, following today’s ratification by lawmakers of the social security agreement between the two countries.
The document was presented in plenary by Dumitru Pîslaru, Secretary General of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, who explained in detail the social protection mechanisms provided for in this agreement.
“This agreement is based on a fundamental principle, namely ensuring real social protection for our citizens who have worked or are working in both countries. We are talking about the aggregation of periods of employment, which means that if a person has not accumulated the minimum required period of service in a single country, the periods worked in the Republic of Moldova and the Slovak Republic are combined so that the right to a pension is guaranteed,” said Pîslaru.
He emphasized that this mechanism eliminates situations in which migrants risk losing their social rights.
“It is very important to note that no citizen loses their contributions. Every period of employment is recognized and taken into account. Each country will pay the portion of the pension corresponding to the period of employment completed on its territory, which ensures a fair, transparent, and predictable system for beneficiaries,” the official said.
Dumitru Pîslaru also explained how social benefits will function under the agreement.
“The agreement covers not only old-age pensions but also disability pensions resulting from general health conditions, as well as benefits arising from work-related accidents or occupational diseases. At the same time, survivor’s pensions are also covered, which provides comprehensive protection for the families of migrant workers,” he noted.
According to him, the document has a direct impact on the quality of life of Moldovan citizens in the diaspora.
“These agreements are not mere technical documents, but tools that truly change people’s lives. They provide security, stability, and confidence for our citizens who work abroad, but who need to know that their rights are protected regardless of the country in which they work,” said Pîslaru.
The official also highlighted the strategic importance of these international partnerships.
“The Republic of Moldova has signed 23 social security agreements to date, 18 of which are already in effect. These agreements, including the one with the Slovak Republic, strengthen our integration into the European social protection system and support the legal mobility of the workforce,” he said.
The agreement was signed on March 26, 2026, in Bratislava, and is part of the expansion of the Republic of Moldova’s international cooperation network in the social security.
PAS MP Adrian Baluțel also addressed the plenary session on the topic, presenting figures on the number of citizens in the diaspora covered by social security agreements.
