Participation of Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration in OSCE Permanent Council Meeting
During a working visit to Vienna on May 21 of this year, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri took part as a special guest in the meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council, where he delivered a presentation on the actions taken by the Government in Chisinau with regard to the Transnistrian case.
The Deputy Prime Minister referred to Chisinau’s efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region, as well as to promote a peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, with strict respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally recognized borders. All these actions take place in the context of the country’s strategic objective of European integration. He also stressed the need for demilitarization and democratization of the region, which represent preconditions for a comprehensive settlement that ensures the proper functioning of the state, democratic standards, and guarantees the protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms.
In his address, the Deputy Prime Minister informed about the dynamics of Chisinau–Tiraspol dialogue in the existing formats of interaction, the current topics on the agenda – freedom of movement, human rights, release of illegally detained persons, farmers, issues in the areas of education and environment – as well as Chisinau’s initiatives: the use of the Romanian language in all Moldovan schools, access to the single emergency service 112, and the Convergence Fund. Special attention was drawn to measures for the gradual reintegration of both banks of the Dniester River by harmonizing economic and fiscal requirements and implementing the Convergence Fund, designed to carry out social, educational, infrastructural and other projects in support of residents on both banks of the Dniester.
The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the importance of closely following developments in Vienna on the OSCE platform and of having the support of external partners for the efforts of the Moldovan authorities to advance the objective of the country’s reintegration.
He also noted the essential role of the EU, a key partner of the Republic of Moldova, in providing multidimensional assistance that strengthens the institutional system, supports structural reforms and the modernization of the country, and creates favorable conditions for sustainable reintegration.
In support of the Deputy Prime Minister’s intervention, several states, including distinct groups (the EU and NB8 – the Nordic and Baltic countries) made statements reiterating their commitment to a peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, with full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and for the country’s European path. Chisinau’s efforts to promote the objective of reintegration were appreciated and encouraged.
