President appoints Nicu Popescu as special envoy for European affairs and strategic partnerships
President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu has signed a decree appointing Nicu Popescu as special envoy for European affairs and strategic partnerships.
The special envoy for European affairs and strategic partnerships has the mandate to strengthen support for Moldova's accession to the European Union, advance the political dimension of the accession process, and develop relationships with the country's strategic partners to enhance peace and security, in close cooperation with President, Government and Parliament.
Nicu Popescu has previously served as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. In this capacity, he led Moldova's diplomatic efforts to open accession negotiations with the European Union, promoted the strengthening of relations with EU member states, the USA and other partners of our country. Nicu Popescu is co-director of the European Security Program at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), based in Paris.
The role of the special envoy is to strengthen the activities of the presidential institution by involving specialists with in-depth training in strategically important areas for the country, in order to achieve the priorities set by the President.
