European Council President in Chișinău: EU desires secure and lasting peace for Ukraine
The European Union does not only wish for a ceasefire, but we desire a lasting peace in Ukraine. European Council President António Costa made the statement during a dialogue with civil society.
The European official mentioned that the EU does not wish to celebrate the ceasefire but wants to celebrate a stable and long-lasting peace in Ukraine.
'We want lasting peace because if we only talk about stopping the fire, we will give Russia time to become stronger and resume these operations. We must avoid what happened in Afghanistan from happening in Ukraine. We must ensure that we indeed have strong security guarantees. For this, we need to work together with all our allies,' Costa said.
He said that yesterday, in London, discussions were held on measures to strengthen Ukraine and enhancement of European defense capabilities.
António Costa is in Chișinău today at the invitation of President Maia Sandu. The visit takes place three years after the submission of Moldova's application to join the European Union and reaffirms the EU's support for our country's European path. The European official has scheduled meetings with leadership of the country and representatives of civil society.
