Moldovan President on Dniester Day

On Dniester Day, President Maia Sandu conveyed a message urging citizens to take responsibility and solidarity in protecting the country's most important water resource.

The President noted that the Dniester River provides drinking water for about 80% of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova and plays an essential role in daily life, agriculture and food.

"Over the centuries, the people on both sides of the Dniester have tied their destinies to its waters. This day is also a call to responsibility. Pollution and deforestation endanger the country's water resources," Sandu said.

In her message, the head of state reiterated the importance of protecting the river for the health of current and future generations, emphasizing that only through joint efforts can a cleaner environment be ensured.

"It is our common responsibility to protect Dniester for a cleaner environment and for the health of our present and future generations," Sandu added.

She mentioned that today, a photo exhibition dedicated to the Dniester River, signed by photographer Maxim Chumash, was inaugurated at the Presidency.

The water resources of the Dniester basin, within the territory of the Republic of Moldova, are estimated at 10,700 million m³. Of this volume, less than 30% is formed on the country's territory. Thus Dniester provides drinking water to about 80% of the country's population and 99% of the population of the municipality of Chișinău.
