Improving relations with Russia possible only in context of fundamental change in security situation in region - Moldovan deputy premier says

Relations between Moldova and Russia are at their lowest level today, and their improvement is possible only in the context of a fundamental change in the security situation in the region. Moldovan diplomat Mihai Popșoi made the statements during an interview for the radio station.

The Deputy Prime Minister said "as long as Russia continues to commit aggressions against Ukraine, killing innocent citizens, and exerting pressure on the Republic of Moldova through energy blackmail, political interference and informational manipulation, we cannot talk about normal relations."

"We are open to dialogue and we want good relations with everyone, but they must be based on mutual respect, sovereignty and integrity of the Republic of Moldova. It is essential that our partners treat us as an equal state and respect the wishes of our people, " Popșoi said.

The minister noted that the situation faced, since the beginning of the current year, by the citizens from the left bank of the Dniester was artificially created by Kremlin, which refuses gas deliveries, although it has contractual obligations and access to alternative routes.

"The goal is the economic destabilization of Moldova and influencing parliamentary elections to install a pro-Russian government that would serve Moscow's interests. There are scenarios in which deliveries could be resumed, under certain conditions, but also scenarios where they will not be resumed at all. In this latter case, we can conclude that the Russian Federation, in a way, is giving up on the Transnistrian region. It would not be surprising, considering the way Russians and Russian speakers are treated in Ukraine, in cities like Mariupol, Kharkiv or Odessa, where they live under the constant threat of alarms and missiles, " Popșoi said.
