Moldovan President, European Commissioner for Equality approach progress in implementing reforms

European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib has begun her visit to Moldova. Her first meeting was with President Maia Sandu, focusing on the progress made in implementing reforms related to the country’s European path, particularly in the areas of the rule of law and equality.

“The discussions focused on the progress made in implementing reforms related to the country’s European path, particularly in the areas of the rule of law and equality, including the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups,” the EU Delegation to Chisinau announced.

The Commissioner also welcomed cooperation through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, which Moldova has been part of since 2023. By participating this summer in a support mission to combat forest fires in Greece, Moldova is showing that it not only benefits from European solidarity but also contributes to Europe’s resilience, the EU Delegation to Moldova said.

Hadja Lahbib is paying her first official visit to Moldova today. In addition to her meeting with Maia Sandu, the European official’s agenda in Chisinau also includes discussions with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and other members of the Government.

During her visit, Hadja Lahbib will attend a demonstration by the Moldovan Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team, using equipment provided with EU support. The Commissioner will also visit a refugee accommodation center and La Strada organization. The discussions will focus on support for victims of sexual violence and the needs of vulnerable refugees.

At the end of her visit, Hadja Lahbib will make joint press statements alongside Minister of Internal Affairs Daniella Misail-Nichitin and Minister of Labour and Social Protection Natalia Plugaru.

This is Hadja Lahbib’s first official visit to Moldova in her capacity as European Commissioner.
