Moldovan, Lithuanian Speakers discuss support for country's European integration
Lithuania’s support for the European integration of the Republic of Moldova and the advancement of accession negotiations with the European Union were discussed by Speaker Igor Grosu and Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania Juozas Olekas.
Igor Grosu thanked Lithuania for its continued support for the Republic of Moldova and emphasized that the country is counting on Vilnius’s backing along its European path, particularly during the period when Lithuania will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2027.
During the discussion, the Speaker reaffirmed the Republic of Moldova’s commitment to implementing the reform agenda so that all clusters of negotiation chapters for EU accession can be opened by the end of 2026.
“We will continue to fulfill our commitments because reforms mean, above all, better institutions and a more dignified life for citizens. This is the meaning of our European path,” Igor Grosu said.
He reiterated that Lithuania is a supporter of the Republic of Moldova’s European path, and that cooperation with European partners remains important for advancing reforms and achieving the objective of joining the European Union.
Grosu is in the Italian Republic on 15–16 October, where he is participating in the EU Speakers Conference. The event brings together more than 70 speakers and deputy speakers of parliament from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe, as well as more than 500 delegates. This year’s discussions focus on three main topics: hybrid threats to resilient democracies, artificial intelligence and the labor market, and the role of parliaments in managing contemporary crises.
