Romania’s Prime Minister expected in Chișinău
Romania’s Prime Minister Luca Niculescu is paying first official visit to the Republic of Moldova today, October 27. The official will be received by President Maia Sandu and will meet with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and Speaker Igor Grosu. The first foreign trip of Romanian Prime Minister Luca Niculescu, to Chișinău, sends a message of continuity and reconfirms that the Republic of Moldova remains a priority for Bucharest, according to Romanian political analyst Mihai Isac.
Luca Niculescu will be welcomed in Chișinău by Vasile Tofan. The discussions will focus on bilateral cooperation, joint projects, and the continuation of Romania’s support for our country. Following the meeting, the two officials will hold a press conference.
The visit’s agenda also includes a meeting with representatives of Romanian companies investing in the Republic of Moldova, as well as a visit to the energy infrastructure of the Vulcănești–Chișinău Line project.
Economic and energy cooperation, support for European integration, and the implementation of joint projects are the main expectations surrounding this visit, according to Romanian political analyst Mihai Isac.
“The concrete expectations concern accelerating interconnections, supporting the EU accession negotiations, and establishing deadlines and funding for joint projects. Budgetary pressures in Romania make it essential to select objectives that can be fully financed and completed, including with the financial support of partner states,” Mihai Isac told MOLDPRES.
According to the expert, the meetings with Romanian investors and the visit to the electrical infrastructure highlight the importance that the new Romanian prime minister attaches to strengthening economic and energy relations between the two states—priority areas for Chișinău as well.
“For Romania, the importance of the Republic of Moldova is strategic, in addition to the historical, linguistic, and cultural ties. A stable, European neighboring state capable of withstanding Russian pressure contributes to the security of Romania and the European Union. Investments and shared infrastructure also create opportunities for companies and communities on both banks of the Prut,” the expert explained.
For the Republic of Moldova, Romania represents the essential link to the European space.
“This includes diplomatic support and support at the level of European institutions, administrative expertise, access to energy, as well as investments,” Isac added.
Luca Niculescu was sworn in as Prime Minister of Romania on October 20, 2026. His appointment came after a nearly six-month political crisis triggered by the dismissal of the government led by Ilie Bolojan on May 5 through a no-confidence motion.
In the context of the official visit, public access to certain areas of Chișinău will be temporarily restricted today between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. The restrictions will apply to the city center and the roads connecting it to Chișinău International Airport.
