Moldova to have three new ambassadors
The Republic of Moldova will have three new ambassadors. The parliamentary committee on foreign policy and European integration approved today the consultative opinions for the candidacies of the designated persons.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sergiu Mihov is to be appointed as our country’s ambassador to Japan, Igor Moldovan – to the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Victor Lăpușneanu will take over the mandate of Permanent Representative of the Republic of Moldova to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi noted that the selection of the candidates was carried out on the basis of rigorous criteria of professionalism and experience.
“They are career diplomats, with extensive experience in the diplomatic service and in key areas of foreign policy. Their expertise and competencies will contribute to the effective promotion of the interests of the Republic of Moldova and to the strengthening of relations with external partners,” said Popșoi.
Sergiu Mihov is a career diplomat with over 27 years of experience within the ministry. He has worked both in the field of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, including within the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Moldova to the Council of Europe. He has held management positions within the ministry and served as the ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Lithuania. He currently serves as State Secretary of the foreign ministry. He holds the diplomatic rank of ambassador.
Igor Moldovan is a career diplomat, holds the rank of minister-counsellor and has more than 20 years of experience in the diplomatic service and in the field of law. He served as deputy head of mission in the embassies of the Republic of Moldova in the State of Israel and Ireland, as well as at the Permanent Mission to the UN Office in Geneva. Within the MFA, he has held various positions in the International Law Department, and he currently heads the International Cooperation for Development and Humanitarian Assistance Section. He holds a degree in law and postgraduate studies in security and European affairs.
Victor Lăpușneanu is a career diplomat with more than 20 years of experience in the diplomatic service of the Republic of Moldova. Throughout his career, he has worked in various subdivisions of the MFA, including International Law and Multilateral Cooperation. He has held various positions within the system, from attaché to head of directorate. He has been posted abroad in Berlin, Vilnius and on two missions in Strasbourg, the last one as Deputy Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe. Since August 2022, he has been working as head of the Multilateral Cooperation Directorate, managing the activity and cooperation of the Republic of Moldova within international organizations, including the UN, Council of Europe, OSCE and NATO. He currently holds the diplomatic rank of Minister Plenipotentiary, which was granted in December 2025.
The three ambassadors will be able to start the activity after the completion of all legal procedures, including appointment to office by Government decision and presidential decree.
