Prime Minister calls for continuous mobilization and support for communities affected by heavy rains
Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu today called on state institutions for continuous mobilization to provide support to citizens and communities affected by the recent heavy rains. At the same time, the head of Government instructed the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection to examine the possibility of providing assistance to affected families.
The Prime Minister stressed that the most serious situation is in Călărași and Ungheni, localities he visited at the end of last week.
“I have personally seen how serious the problems faced by people are. We have affected households, damaged infrastructure and families who have lost a great deal of what they had,” said Alexandru Munteanu at today’s Cabinet meeting.
He noted that considerable resources have been involved in dealing with the consequences of the rains, including 1,240 employees and more than 300 vehicles and intervention units.
“Interventions are continuing on the ground. I call on the National Crisis Management Center, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Army and the Ministry of Environment to remain mobilized and to continue supporting local authorities and the people affected. The risk was major, we managed to avoid even bigger problems, and we must ensure that in similar situations we are protected,” the Prime Minister said.
Alexandru Munteanu also requested that the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection urgently come forward with support measures for the affected families.
“Work is being done for the disaster victims and especially for the children who have been left without support as a result of these tragedies,” the he underlined.
At the same time, the Prime Minister stressed that it is important to analyze what measures can be taken so that such situations cause as little damage as possible.
“This situation shows us how important it is to have strong local authorities, well organized and capable of efficiently managing community problems. We reacted promptly, but we also identified shortcomings that must be corrected. I have seen that the Ministry of Environment has already started checks on the management of ponds and lakes. The lack of drainage and the blocking of it with waste have significantly worsened the situation in the area, and we must ensure that in the future we can be better prepared,” concluded Alexandru Munteanu.
Heavy rains of 22 May severely affected dozens of localities, especially in the districts of Călărași and Ungheni, destroying roads, blocking trains and flooding people’s households.
