Moldovan parliament speaker, after meetings in Budapest, says Hungary supports Moldova in its efforts

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has said that Hungary supports Moldova in its efforts to pursue European integration, noting that Hungarian officials had provided assurances regarding support for the country’s European path. The speaker made statements to this effect after his visit to Budapest.

Upon returning from Budapest, the parliament speaker rejected reports that had appeared in the public sphere claiming that the Hungarian authorities opposed the opening of negotiation clusters for Moldova. Igor Grosu said that the messages received in Budapest indicated support for the country’s European path.

“I received assurances from the Speaker of Parliament, the National Assembly, as well as from the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Hungary supports Moldova in its efforts, appreciates the work we are carrying out and what we are doing and assured us of its full support,” Igor Grosu said.

The parliament speaker emphasized the importance of communicating with the authorities of all European Union member states, as well as with opposition forces in those countries, in order to strengthen support for Moldova’s European path. During his visit to Budapest, the Moldovan parliament speaker invited Hungarian officials to visit Moldova.

“I also took the opportunity to invite them to Chișinău. I hope they will accept our invitation as soon as possible,” Grosu said.

Igor Grosu said that Moldova had made significant progress on its European integration path, referring to the statement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding the preparation of roadmaps for candidate countries that are at an advanced stage of the European integration process. According to Grosu, Moldova is among the countries targeted by this initiative.

“We do not know all the details yet, but this offers a broader and more secure perspective for Moldova. This roadmap is primarily meant for countries that have made significant progress in the European integration process, and Moldova is certainly one of these countries,” Grosu said.

The parliament speaker stressed that Moldova must continue its reforms and be ready to advance in the European integration process, making the most of the support provided by member states and European institutions.
