Moldovan Speaker to visit Budapest to persuade Hungarian authorities to support opening of EU negotiation clusters

Speaker Igor Grosu will visit Budapest next week, to discuss the Republic of Moldova’s European path with Hungarian authorities and advocate for the country’s support in the negotiations for accession to the European Union, particularly for the opening of negotiation clusters. He made the statement at a TV show.


„Next week I will visit Budapest. I will take the opportunity to convey firsthand information about the situation in the Republic of Moldova and the arguments in favor of opening the clusters. We must do this consistently,” said Grosu.


He emphasized that Chisinau authorities must take into account the electoral calendar of European Union member states and boost dialogue with European partners in order to explain the progress and realities in the Republic of Moldova.


„We must take into account the electoral calendar in the European Union member states, find time in our agenda and in theirs, invite them here when they are willing to come, provide them with all the information, bring them not only to the capital but also to localities across the country, and have them speak with citizens, so that we can convey to them and ensure that they truly understand the situation in the Republic of Moldova,” Grosu said.


According to the official, direct dialogue with representatives of member states is all the more important given that sovereignist and extremist parties are gaining increasing political support in several European countries.


„In general, the entire world is going through a period in which sovereignist and extremist parties are gaining political support, and we have also seen some of them adjust their discourse while in government. But I am not saying this to validate this hypothesis. We must be careful to communicate and explain things to them,” he noted.


Igor Grosu also drew attention to the risks posed by the use of social media and non-transparent financial flows, which he said must be taken into account in dialogue with Western partners.


„I return to what I told our Western partners: we must not underestimate the dangers that persist in the way social media and dirty, non-transparent money are used,” he concluded.


In recent years, Hungary has been one of the main factors complicating the advancement of the Republic of Moldova’s accession process, after the government led by Viktor Orbán blocked the opening of negotiations with Ukraine, with the dossiers of the two countries effectively linked. The situation changed in 2026, following the arrival of a new government in Budapest. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar dropped the obstruction, allowing member states to open the first negotiation cluster with the Republic of Moldova in June. In July, the EU also opened Cluster 6, concerning external relations.

His visit comes as Hungary’s position is important for accelerating the Republic of Moldova’s accession process, including the opening of the next negotiation clusters. Chisinau is thus seeking to consolidate political support in the capitals of EU member states.
