Lithuania to support Moldova’s European path during Presidency of Council of EU

Lithuania will continue to support Moldova’s European path, including during the period when it holds the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union, starting from January 1, 2027. The subject today was discussed by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi with Lithuania’s new Ambassador to Moldova Mindaugas Kačerauskis.

The meeting took place on the occasion of the start of the Lithuanian ambassador’s term in Moldova. The two officials discussed the priorities of bilateral cooperation, ongoing projects and the expansion of cooperation in the field of security and defense.

An important topic of the discussions was Moldova’s accession process to the European Union, including the prospect of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU. During the meeting, Ambassador Mindaugas Kačerauskis emphasized that supporting Moldova’s accession to the EU would be one of the priorities of his mandate and expressed his willingness to work closely with the Moldovan authorities.

For his part, Mihai Popsoi wished the diplomat success in carrying out his mandate and expressed confidence that the relations between Moldova and Lithuania would continue to develop, both bilaterally and in the context of European integration.

“We are grateful to Lithuania for its support for Moldova. We have a very close partnership with Lithuania, built over time on trust and mutual support. We want to continue developing this relationship and build on the solid foundation we already have,” said Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi.

The minister emphasized that Moldova would continue its reforms and the process of strengthening its institutions, noting that these efforts were primarily aimed at citizens and improving their quality of life.

The sides also addressed priorities for cooperation in the field of security and defense, as well as ongoing bilateral projects.

The diplomatic relations between Moldova and Lithuania were established on July 8, 1992.
