Moldovan PM meets Director of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for Ukraine and Moldova
The economic development priorities of Moldova and the expansion of cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have been discussed by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and EBRD Director for Ukraine and Moldova Arvid Tuerkner.
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan praised the EBRD’s contribution to modernizing the economy of Moldova and emphasized the government’s interest in strengthening the partnership and attracting more investment to sectors with growth potential.
“We have a strong partnership with the EBRD and want to take it to an even higher level. Our priority is to accelerate economic growth, support companies that can increase their exports and invest in areas where Moldova can make better use of its potential. We are counting on the EBRD to mobilize new investments and financing for our economy,” Prime Minister Tofan said.
The sides discussed expanding financing for the private sector, supporting companies with development potential, increasing access to financing, stimulating exports, as well as investments in energy, infrastructure and agriculture.
An important topic of the meeting was the development of the irrigation infrastructure, which is a priority for the government and is necessary to increase the productivity and competitiveness of agriculture. EBRD representatives expressed readiness to advance cooperation in this area and noted their intention to sign a new project in this regard by the end of this year.
EBRD Director for Ukraine and Moldova Arvid Tuerkner reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to supporting the Moldova in accelerating economic growth and advancing its European Union accession process.
The EBRD is one of Moldova’s main investment partners. Presently, the Bank’s portfolio in the country exceeds 1.3 billion euros and comprises 74 active operations. Since the beginning of its operations in Moldova in 1992, the institution has invested more than 3.1 billion euros in 200 projects.
