PM at European Business Summit says Moldova made its choice - country embraces Europe fully, without hesitation
Moldova has made its choice: we embrace Europe fully and without hesitation. We are returning to where we belong — in a space of freedom, opportunities and development. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu made statements to this effect at the European Business Summit in Brussels. The PM presented data showing stability and economic growth and referred to the major challenges Moldova had faced.
"It is a great honor for me to deliver the closing remarks at this meeting of leaders shaping Europe's economy, competitiveness and strategic direction. Moldova has made its choice: we embrace Europe fully and without hesitation. We are returning to where we belong — in a space of freedom, opportunities, and development," Munteanu said.
The prime minister presented economic data reflecting the country's stability and growth: Moldova's GDP recorded a 1.1-per cent growth in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the year before and 1.6 per cent compared to the previous quarter. This was supported by key sectors, such as construction (+7.2 per cent), energy (+20 per cent), information and communication technology (+2 per cent), and export of services (+10 per cent).
Munteanu spoke about the major challenges Moldova had faced: the pandemic, energy crises, external interference and the war at the border.
"Despite these global shocks, our economy has not only remained stable — it is accelerating. We have stabilized the economy and prepared it for sustainable development," he emphasized.
The PM reiterated the government's commitment to continue reforms and transform Moldova into a functional and competitive European state. Priorities include strengthening production and innovation, accelerating energy transition, developing the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, expanding service exports and increasing domestic demand.
"The EU Growth Plan for Moldova — the largest support package in our history — is transformative. Over 150 reforms will be implemented by 2027, and the economic growth rate is estimated to reach up to 7 per cent by 2028," Munteanu added.
He also highlighted the progress in trade and European regulations: liberalization of agricultural products, increasing export quotas for fruits and vegetables, aligning technical and safety standards with EU regulations and the functionality of the consumer protection center.
"This is not a Moldova integrating 'sometime.' This is a Moldova integrating now — every day," said the prime minister.
Munteanu concluded his speech with a call to the European business community:
"Moldova is open. Moldova is competitive. Moldova is ready. Let's build together the next chapter of Europe's competitiveness — one in which Moldova contributes to the stability, innovation and economic growth of our continent. I invite you all to visit Moldova. After all, we are part of the same family!"
Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu is on an official visit to Brussels, in order to discuss the reforms’ agenda and European integration of the country. The Moldovan leader met European Union officials: Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission; Antonio Costa, President of the European Council; Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Marta Kos, European Commissioner for Enlargement.
During the visit, Munteanu participated in the European Enlargement Forum on the topic, Completing the Union, Securing our Future, and delivered a speech at the European Business Summit, marking the 25th anniversary of the event.
The prime minister concludes his visit with a meeting with the Moldovan Diaspora from Belgium.
