Deputy PM for reintegration says Moldova allocates more than 218 million lei to support residents of Transnistrian region in first half of 2026

Moldova has allocated more than 218 million lei to support residents of the Transnistrian region during the first half of 2026 through medical services, social benefits and the national education system. Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri unveiled data to this effect.

The official rejected claims by the so-called Tiraspol administration that the central authorities do not make financial investments in the Transnistrian region, describing the statements as a “deliberate distortion of reality.”

“This is not merely a false statement, but a deliberate distortion of reality, disproved by concrete facts and figures,” Valeriu Chiveri said.

According to the deputy prime minister, in the first six months of the year alone, the state allocated more than 100 million lei for medical insurance for residents of the Transnistrian region, as well as for the reimbursement of medicines and medical devices.

Another more than 76 million lei was allocated for social benefits, including pensions and various allowances, while more than 42 million lei was directed through the national education system.

“If we add these figures together, we are talking about more than 218 million lei allocated directly by the state for citizens of the Transnistrian region during the first six months of the year alone. These are concrete facts and figures, not political statements,” Chiveri emphasized.

The deputy PM said that the support for residents of the Transnistrian region would continue and be expanded, including through the use of resources from the Reintegration Fund.

Valeriu Chiveri stressed that the support provided to the region was not limited to the state’s direct expenditures. According to him, companies on the left bank of the Dniester that provide jobs and income for citizens operate in accordance with the legislation and international commitments of Moldova.

The official advocated strengthening ties between the two banks of the Dniester and continuing the process of rapprochement and reintegration of the country.

“It is our responsibility to strengthen the ties between the two banks of the Dniester and continue the reintegration process. Support provided to citizens is not a favor, but the state’s responsibility toward all its citizens,” Valeriu Chiveri said.

The deputy prime minister for reintegration made the statements in the context of remarks by the so-called Tiraspol leader, Vadim Krasnoselski, regarding the authorities’ decision to apply value added tax (VAT) and excise duties to certain goods brought in by economic operators from the left bank of Dniester.

Starting from September 1, 2026, VAT and excise duties, as applicable, will be imposed on certain categories of goods brought in by economic operators from the left bank of the Dniester. The measure is part of a process to harmonize the tax regime, which is to be implemented gradually by January 1, 2030. The authorities say that the taxes collected will be directed to a Convergence Fund, meant to finance social and infrastructure projects, including in localities on the left bank of Dniester.
