Moldova, Argentina launch negotiations to establish first direct air services between two countries

Moldova is taking a strategic step towards diversifying aviation markets, by expanding air connectivity with South America. The government today approved, at the proposal by the Infrastructure and Regional Development Ministry (MIDR), the start of negotiations for signing a bilateral agreement on air services with Argentina.

The decision marks a first in air transport relations between the two states, with the main goal of opening new opportunities for travel, economic cooperation and tourism.

“The proposed agreement will establish the necessary legal framework for operating air services, ensuring strict and standardized rules. The document will regulate vital aspects, such as clear procedures for maintaining the highest flight safety and security standards; transparent rules for airlines regarding fare-setting and route authorization and the defining of technical modalities by which flights can be operated between the designated points from the two countries,” says MIDR.

At the same time, the cabinet of ministers approved the empowerment of the official delegation that will conduct technical discussions with the Buenos Aires authorities to finalize the text of the agreement.

According to the Infrastructure and Regional Development Ministry, the launch of potential direct or connecting flights facilitated by this agreement will generate a multidimensional positive impact on the national economy. The expansion of the routes’ network from Chisinau to Argentine destinations is expected to strengthen the position of the Eugen Doga International Airport as a regional hub, by attracting new passengers’ flows, enhancing competition on the domestic aviation market—which may lead to better services for citizens—strengthening diplomatic ties and creating a favorable investment climate by facilitating business contacts between economic operators of Moldova and the ones from Argentina.

The implementation of this agreement fits into the state policy of removing barriers to air services and integrating Moldova into major global economic circuits.
