Moldovan foreign affairs minister meets MEP: continuing reforms, leveraging EU support on agenda

The European path, implementation of reforms and acceleration of economic development today were discussed by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi at a meeting with MEP Sven Mikser, standing rapporteur for Moldova in the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), on a working visit to Chisinau.

The discussions focused on developments in the country’s EU accession process, priorities for advancing the agreed agenda, with emphasis on continuing reforms and making the most of EU support. In this context, the sides reiterated the importance of parliamentary cooperation between Moldova and the European Union, as well as the signing of the renewed Memorandum of Understanding, which helps strengthen institutional capacities and supports bringing the Moldovan legislature closer to EU standards.

Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi thanked the European Parliament for its support in promoting the country’s European integration path, including through the Growth Plan for Moldova, a package worth 1.9 billion euros meant to support reforms and speed up economic development – the largest financial assistance ever granted by the EU to the country.

The Moldovan diplomacy head also expressed his gratitude for the continuous contribution of the EU legislature to strengthening democratic resilience in the face of external interference and to advancing reforms in the field of the rule of law.

“Support from European institutions makes us more accountable to continue reforms and deliver tangible results for citizens. Despite the security and economic challenges generated by Russia’s war against Ukraine, we stay committed to advancing on the path towards EU accession, based on our own merits,” said Mihai Popsoi.

For his part, Sven Mikser commended the progress made by Moldova and underlined the importance of the European Parliament’s Office, inaugurated in Chisinau in November 2025, for strengthening interinstitutional dialogue and supporting the authorities in the process of bringing the country closer to the European Union.

In addition to the European agenda, the sides also discussed the regional security situation, including joint efforts to strengthen stability and peace on the continent.
