National competition in Chisinau: students from non-Romanian language schools test mother-tongue skills

The written exam in minority languages is taking place today as part of the national Olympiads. Around 250 pupils from all over Moldova are registered in the competition in Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Gagauz language and literature.

The Olympiads are being held at the Ion Creanga State Pedagogical University from Chisinau and bring together pupils, dedicated teachers and education experts, thus celebrating the cultural and linguistic heritage of Moldova’s national minorities.

“Minority languages represent a national or regional treasure, being protected and promoted by major international institutions. I congratulate the young people for the courageous decision to study in depth the language of the communities they represent. This decision speaks of courage, determination and the wish to surpass your limits. Language is not just a means of communication, but an open gateway to a new culture, tradition and faith that we must preserve with utmost care,” said Ludmila Pavlov, Deputy Secretary General of the Education and Research Ministry.

The true victory lies in knowing and passing on linguistic heritage, emphasized the chairpersons of the National Olympic Councils. In their speeches, they highlighted the invaluable importance of the mother tongue and urged young people to set aside a purely competitive spirit and enjoy the inspiration provided by literature and the written word.

The award ceremony will take place on April 26, at 12:00, at the Classroom of the Future, Ion Creanga State Pedagogical University of Chisinau.
