EU extends sanctions against persons, entities involved in actions destabilizing Moldova

The Council of the European Union today ruled to extend sanctions against persons and entities involved in actions destabilizing Moldova until 29 April 2027.

The restrictive measures target 23 individuals and five legal entities considered in charge of undermining or threatening the state’s sovereignty and independence. The people included on the list include Ilan Shor, Marina Tauber, Vladimir Plahotniuc and Evghenia Gutul.

According to the EU Council, the sanctions include the freezing of assets held on the territory of the European Union, a ban on entry and transit in member states, as well as a prohibition on providing funds or economic resources to the sanctioned persons and organizations.

In its statement, the European Union notes that it maintains its support for the Moldova, including with regard to the country’s resilience, security and stability, in the context of destabilizing actions attributed to Russia. They include, according to the same source, hybrid attacks targeting the state’s democratic institutions.

At the same time, European officials reaffirmed their commitment to continue close cooperation with Moldova, a candidate country for accession to the European Union.

The restrictive measures were first introduced in April 2023, at a request by Moldova. They allow the EU to impose sanctions on persons responsible for supporting or implementing actions that undermine or threaten the sovereignty and independence of Moldova, as well as the democracy, rule of law, stability or security of the country.

Since the beginning of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, efforts to destabilize Moldova have boosted, representing a direct threat to the stability and security of the EU’s external borders.
