Moldovan parliament speaker conveys message on 40 years since Chernobyl catastrophe

Chisinau, April 26 – Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has delivered a commemorative message on the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, emphasizing the profound impact of the tragedy on people and the need to prevent such disasters in the future.

“It is our duty to do everything possible to ensure that such tragic events never happen again and that people can live in peace and safety,” the official said.

Igor Grosu recalled that, on April 26, 1986, just a few kilometers from the current territory of Moldova, one of the most dramatic disasters of the last century had occurred.

“The disaster affected millions of lives, and its echo still resonates across generations,” noted the Speaker of Parliament.

At the same time, the official highlighted the contribution and sacrifice of Moldovan citizens involved in eliminating the consequences of the accident. Over 3,500 people from Moldova were mobilized for intervention, many of them paying with their health or even their lives to limit the effects of the tragedy.

President Maia Sandu today is paying a visit to Kyiv, where she will hold meetings with her Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The head of state informed  that she would also go to Chernobyl, in order to pay tribute to those who had intervened after the 1986 catastrophe.

On April 26, it is 40 years since the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which occurred in 1986, when an explosion at reactor number four released massive amounts of radiation into the atmosphere. The accident, still considered the most severe in the history of nuclear energy, generated a radioactive cloud that quickly spread over much of Europe, affecting millions of people and contaminating vast areas of land.

According to United Nations data, more than 3.5 million people were hit and approximately 50,000 square kilometers were contaminated.
