More than 60 students from Moldova, participating in the Moldova Model United Nations 2026 project, visited the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) today. During the discussions, the young people expressed interest in the country’s cooperation with international partners, in order to strengthen institutions’ capacity to respond to current challenges, particularly in the security and areas.
Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi welcomed the students to the MAE and emphasized the importance of their participation in personal and professional development programmes. The minister shared his own experience, gained both during his student years and throughout his political and diplomatic career. The official encouraged them to take advantage of international educational opportunities, including the Erasmus, FLEX and Model United Nations programmes, as well as the possibility of undertaking internships at the MAE.
“Negotiation, dialogue and argumentation skills, the ability to persuade and find reasonable compromises are useful, regardless of the career you choose: whether in diplomacy, the private sector or public office. Such experiences help you develop your skills, broaden your general knowledge and become professionals,” Mihai Popsoi said.
The deputy PM also spoke about the importance of the country’s European path, the benefits of European integration for citizens, as well as the steps that Moldova must take to become an EU member state.
“We are making considerable efforts to advance the accession negotiations. The responsibility of the MAE is to maintain and strengthen dialogue with EU member states and European institutions, in order to achieve our national strategic goal—joining the great European family. This requires everyone’s involvement, including the one of young people,” Mihai Popsoi said.
During the discussions, the students learned more about consular activities, economic diplomacy and the basic principles of state diplomatic protocol. The agenda also included a practical exercise simulating the signing of an international treaty, giving participants the opportunity to become familiar with some of the procedures specific to the diplomatic work.
MAE representatives presented the students with the institution’s main responsibilities, the foreign policy priorities of Moldova and the role of diplomacy in promoting national interests in the current international context.
