Strengthening collective defense and support for Ukraine discussed at NATO Parliamentary Assembly Spring Session
Strengthening collective defense, support for Ukraine, and increasing resilience in the face of security threats were among the main topics discussed at the Spring Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO PA), held in Vilnius on 29 May - 1 June.
The Republic of Moldova was represented at the meeting by MP Mihail Druță, a member of the Committee on Foreign Policy. The event was hosted by the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and brought together over 230 parliamentarians from NATO member states and partner countries.
The agenda included issues such as strengthening the Alliance’s collective defense, continued support for Ukraine, as well as measures to counter hybrid threats. Participants also discussed the need to increase defense spending, develop strategic partnerships, and promote innovation in the field of security.
During the session, meetings of political groups and committees were held, followed by the plenary meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly. At the end, a joint declaration was adopted, emphasizing the importance of a more resilient and stronger transatlantic Alliance.
The document highlights that the Russian Federation continues to pose a direct and long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security, including through its war against Ukraine and destabilizing actions directed against allied states. At the same time, the declaration stresses the need to strengthen defense and to intensify cooperation between the parliaments of the member states.
The NATO Parliamentary Assembly brings together parliamentarians from the 32 member states of the Alliance and from associated countries. The Republic of Moldova has held the status of associate member since 1994.
