VIDEO // Moldovan authorities work on strategy for Transnistrian region's reintegration; deputy PM says 5+2 negotiation format no longer functional

The Moldovan authorities are working on a strategy for the reintegration of the Transnistrian region, as the '5+2' negotiation format is no longer functional and cannot be resumed in the current regional context. Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri today made statements to this effect, following the government meeting.

According to the official, some aspects of the strategy cannot be presented in real time, as this could prejudice the final outcome.

‘’The '5+2' negotiation format is no longer valid. This has been stated repeatedly at various levels. It would be very complicated to imagine that two important actors in the process, involved in a direct war, could participate in the resolution of another conflict. Therefore, for the moment and for the foreseeable future, this format cannot be considered as one that could continue the negotiation process,’’ said Valeriu Chiveri.

At the same time, the official emphasized that, in the context of a potential peace negotiation package between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, Moldova does not aim to be part of a conflict resolution package, but rather a regional security package.

‘’For us, this would exclusively involve the withdrawal of Russian military forces from the region. As for the actual resolution of the conflict in Moldova, we will engage in facilitating a negotiation process that includes both Tiraspol and the international partners supporting us, primarily the European Union, the United States, and the OSCE,’’ noted Valeriu Chiveri.

The '5+2' negotiation format involves the participation of representatives of the sides, mediators and observers – Moldova, the Transnistrian region, OSCE, the Russian Federation, Ukraine, the United States of America, and the European Union. This format aims to develop principles for a comprehensive resolution, based on the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
