CNMC director after Tuesday’s heavy rains: There are no major risks

The heavy rains recorded throughout Tuesday did not cause flooding in localities or other major risks. National Crisis Management Center (CNMC) director Serghei Diaconu unveiled the information, based on the latest data.

“We were prepared for these unfavorable weather conditions. Among the measures taken was the strengthening of the dikes downstream on the Ichel River, which allowed us not to worry for the moment about possible floods. As of today, we have no reports of flooded localities. We will have another information update at 12:00. We have received several calls from citizens reporting fallen trees in various districts or flooded cellars. The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations is working there. Otherwise, there are no major risks,” said Serghei Diaconu.

The CNMC director stressed that the authorities and responsible institutions have worked intensively in recent times to strengthen protective dikes and clean drainage channels.

“Upstream on the Ichel River, instructions were given to reinforce the dikes so that we can be sure that the major discharges of water expected on Friday–Saturday–Sunday will not make us worry about the flooding of localities,” added the CNMC head.

On 2 June, the Republic of Moldova was under a Yellow Code warning for heavy rains. Under these conditions, in the last 24 hours, rescuers and firefighters intervened in 32 risk situations, which involved removing fallen trees and carrying out towing and unblocking operations for vehicles.
