DOC // Amendments to Citizenship Law published in Official Journal
The amendments to the Citizenship Law, which introduce new legislative solutions for documenting persons without identity documents up to the age of 18, have been published in the Official Journal and have entered into force.
The new provisions were adopted by Parliament and aim to facilitate the documentation of persons who acquired the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova by birth but did not manage to obtain identity documents before reaching the age of majority.
According to the new regulations, the status of citizen of the Republic of Moldova can be confirmed if, at the time of birth, the person had at least one parent who was a Moldovan citizen, provided that there are no legal grounds for refusal.
Among the grounds for refusal provided by law are committing crimes against peace or war crimes, involvement in acts of terrorism, carrying out activities that affect state security, as well as the person’s inclusion on international or national sanctions lists. At the same time, the law stipulates that military registration will be carried out exclusively on the basis of the identity document or information from the State Population Register.
The law enters into force upon the publication in the Official Journal, and the Government, within two months from the date of publication of this law, will amend its normative acts in accordance with it.
