Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu today visited the areas worst hit by the torrential rains on May 22. The PM assured that the authorities would assess all the damage caused and would intervene to support the communities, so that people can return to normality as soon as possible.

Alexandru Munteanu spoke on the ground with people whose households were affected by flash floods, as well as with the teams working in the field to eliminate the consequences of the bad weather. He stressed that this was a difficult situation for many families and that swift action was needed to help citizens.

“Today I was in the Calarasi district, in the localities affected by heavy rains and flash floods, including Bravicea and Hirjauca. I spoke with people who saw their households flooded and roads damaged, as well as with the teams that are intervening on the ground. Unfortunately, we have considerable damage and also one casualty. It is a difficult situation for many families, and now the most important thing is to stand by the people and intervene quickly wherever it is needed,” said Prime Minister Munteanu.

The official noted that rescuers, police officers, local authorities and intervention teams were working continuously to pump out water, secure high-risk areas and assist affected people.

At the same time, the prime minister pointed out that the authorities would assess all the damage caused and would intervene to support the affected communities, so that people can return to normality as soon as possible.

The heavy rains in the last 24 hours have severely affected dozens of localities of Moldova, especially in Calarasi and Ungheni districts. Roads have been destroyed, trains blocked and people’s households flooded. The dam in Hirjauca broke under the pressure of the water and flooded nearby localities. Three trains were temporarily stopped, but the authorities managed to resume traffic and all passengers reached their destinations safely. More settlements were left without electricity and work is underway around the clock to stabilize the system.

Under these circumstances, President Maia Sandu ordered continuous and rapid interventions to help citizens in the affected communities. The head of state asked the government and the responsible ministries to take all necessary measures, assess the damage and provide support wherever needed.
