Old-style Orthodox Christians honor Saint Nicholas of Summer on May 22

The old-style Orthodox Christians on May 22 celebrate Saint Nicholas, one of the most beloved and venerated saints of the Christianity. On this occasion, divine services are held in churches throughout Moldova and believers take part in prayers and traditions dedicated to the feast popularly known as “Saint Nicholas of Summer.”

Considered the protector of children, the needy and travelers, Saint Nicholas is known for his acts of mercy and for defending the Christian faith. In folk tradition, the day is associated with rituals for abundance and the protection of crops. In some settlements, religious processions are organized across fields and hills to bless agricultural land and animals. At the same time, housewives prepare and distribute braided bread and cakes as symbols of generosity and communion.

According to data by the State Population Register, over 93,000 citizens of Moldova celebrate their name day today. The most common given names are Nicolae, borne by 43,569 people, Nicolai – 32,823, and Nicoleta – 12,726.
