Moldovan president calls for continuous efforts to address aftermath of heavy rains: authorities to assess damage, provide support where needed

President Maia Sandu has ordered continuous and rapid interventions in the context of the heavy rains over the past 24 hours. The head of state asked the government and the responsible ministries to take all necessary measures, to assess the damage and to provide support where the situation is severe.

Maia Sandu said that the last 24 hours had been quite difficult for Moldova. Torrential rains have severely affected dozens of localities, especially in the Calarasi and Ungheni districts. Roads have been destroyed, trains blocked and people’s households flooded. The dam in Hîrjauca broke under the pressure of the water and flooded nearby localities. Three trains were temporarily stopped, but the authorities managed to resume circulation and all passengers reached their destinations safely. More settlements were left without electricity and continuous efforts are underway to stabilize the system.

The Moldovan president emphasized that the authorities stood by the communities that had suffered, and that all institutions had mobilized to remove the consequences of the calamities and to provide the necessary assistance. The head of state thanked all those who worked throughout the night and continue to offer support – rescuers and firefighters of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), police officers, road maintenance workers, employees of the Railway of Moldova state enterprise, doctors and energy sector workers. “I thank every person who rushes to help in times of need,” said Maia Sandu.

At the same time, the president noted that “the situation remains complicated and continuous interventions are needed to protect people’s lives and to restore safety and normality in the localities hit.”

In the context, Maia Sandu has requested the government and the responsible ministries to take all necessary measures, to assess the damage and to provide support where the situation is severe.

“We stand with the families going through this hardship. With solidarity, rapid interventions and support measures, we will get through this difficult moment together. Dear citizens, let us take care of children, the elderly and the most vulnerable and make sure that those around us are sheltered and safe,” Maia Sandu concluded.

Following the heavy rainfall recorded on May 22 2026, employees of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations intervened in 22 high-risk situations.
