Measures to protect Dniester: new pollutant collection system set in north Moldova settlement

A new system for collecting polluting substances has been installed at the dam in Arionesti, northern Donduseni district, as part of the authorities’ interventions following the pollution of the Dniester River. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu went to the site, where he discussed the ongoing works and impact‑mitigation measures with the teams involved.

“At the dam in Arionesti, a new system for capturing polluting substances was installed today. I discussed with the teams directly involved in the intervention the ongoing works and the measures applied to limit the impact,” the prime minister said.

According to the PM, six protective barriers are currently set and another one is to be mounted in the near future to strengthen intervention capacity.

The Dniester’s pollution occurred following the attack on the Dniester Hydropower Complex in Ukraine during the night of March 6–7, when explosions caused discharges of technical oils and petroleum products into the water. A few days later, on March 10, contamination was confirmed on the territory of Moldova too, including through laboratory tests that indicated exceedances of the admissible limits.

As a result, more localities in the north of the country, including the Balti municipality and the districts of Soroca, Sangerei and Floresti, were left without drinking water for several days, as the authorities had to suspend supply in order to protect the population.

Following technical interventions and water quality monitoring, the authorities today announced the resumption of drinking water supply, after confirming that safety indicators had returned to normal values.
