Meteorologists warn of risk of local flooding due to torrential rains in Moldova

The rains forecast for July 19 may cause runoff on slopes, torrents and small rivers, as well as water accumulation in low-lying areas, creating a risk of local flooding, warns the Authority for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring.

According to the institution, in the context of the weather warning regarding rainfall, locally in the form of heavy showers with precipitation amounts of 15–35 l/m², there is a danger of slope runoff and increased flow in torrents and small rivers. Water accumulation and local flooding may also occur in low-lying areas.

Meteorologists specify that the hydrological forecast will be reviewed and updated, depending on the evolution of hydrometeorological conditions.

The Authority for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring has earlier issued a Yellow Code for atmospheric instability for the entire territory of Moldova, valid from July 19, 16:00 to July 20, 02:00. According to the warning, short-term rains accompanied by thunderstorms are expected, and in some areas, heavy showers with amounts of 15–35 l/m², hail, and wind gusts of up to 15–20 m/s will be recorded.

Torrential rains have caused flooding in Prahova County, Romania, and the storm clouds are moving towards Moldova.
