Moldovan president says leadership wants relationship with India to bring concrete results for people of Moldova

President Maia Sandu is hosting President of India Droupadi Murmu in Chisinau today. It is the first time since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Moldova and India in 1992 that an Indian head of state visits our country.

“The fact that this visit is taking place now tells a lot about today’s Moldova: a country that the world sees and respects,” underlined President Maia Sandu.

The visit takes place at a time when both countries are moving closer to the European Union. Moldova is negotiating EU accession, while India concluded a free trade agreement with the EU at the beginning of this year. As Moldova adopts European standards and moves closer to the single market, the country is becoming an attractive destination for Indian companies that want to produce and sell in Europe. For Moldova, this means investment, technology transfer, and jobs created at home. For Moldovan producers, aligning standards with European ones and the growing economic proximity between India and the European Union facilitate access to a market of 1.4 billion Indian consumers.

The two heads of state reviewed the upward trajectory of the Moldovan-Indian relations in recent years: the resumption, in October 2024 in New Delhi, of bilateral political consultations after a 21-year pause; the inauguration, in December 2024, of the Embassy of Moldova in New Delhi; the opening, in February 2025, of the Indian market for Moldovan apples; as well as the accession of Moldova to the International Solar Alliance, a global initiative launched by India together with France. In addition, the Indian company KEC International, winner of an international tender, built the 400 kV Vulcanesti–Chisinau overhead power line – a strategic project for Moldova’s energy security, now in its final stages of testing and commissioning.

A bridge between our societies is also formed by the more than 1,400 Indian students pursuing their studies at universities of Moldova, most of them at the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Against this background, the two Presidents discussed deepening the bilateral cooperation. “We want this relationship to bring concrete results for our people – in trade, in investment, in energy, in education and health,” Maia Sandu stressed.

During the visit, the Moldova–India Business Forum was organized, with the participation of business representatives from both countries. In her message to the participants, President Maia Sandu noted that Moldova offers investors a competitive environment and access to the European market, inviting Indian companies to see our country “not just as a market, but as a platform for connecting to European value chains.” Among the areas with potential, there are expanding access for Moldovan agri-food products to the Indian market, leveraging India’s experience in engineering and the pharmaceutical industry, as well as cooperation in digital technologies and artificial intelligence.

President Murmu’s visit has strengthened the political dialogue between the two countries and opened a new stage in the bilateral relationship. In the near future, two memorandums of understanding on cooperation in the fields of education and health are to be signed.
