Moldovan firefighters heading to Greece to help extinguish forest fires

A contingent of 24 firefighters from the Republic of Moldova will leave for Greece on Tuesday, July 14, to take part in a pre-positioning mission aimed at supporting the Greek authorities in combating forest fires. The team will be deployed in the Thessaloniki region.

According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (GIES), this is a team specialized in ground forest firefighting (GFFFv-MD), which will take seven units of specialized equipment to Greece. The contingent will travel by land.

The official deployment ceremony of the firefighters will take place on Tuesday at 06:30 at the premises of the Regional Search and Rescue Directorate No. 1 in the municipality of Chisinau, located at 75/3 Alba Iulia Street.

The mission is part of international cooperation efforts for managing forest fires, as Greece faces an increased risk of outbreak and spread of such fires during the summer season.

This is the third consecutive summer in which Moldovan firefighters and rescuers join their European partners to help prevent and extinguish forest fires under the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.

Last year, between July 15 and August 15, a team of 44 Moldovan firefighters, divided into two shifts, took part in the European Union’s civil protection activities alongside teams from Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Romania, and Bulgaria.
