Moldovan president conveys message on Chisinau’s City Day

President Maia Sandu has conveyed a message on the occasion of the 590th  anniversary of the first documentary mention of the Chisinau municipality. The head of state advocated for the development of a European capital with modern public transport, safer streets, more green spaces and respect for historical heritage.

In a message published on social media, the Moldovan president said that, over the course of 590 years, Chisinau had brought together people, stories and generations. For some, it is the city of their childhood, while for others it is the place where they came to study, work and start a family.

“For me too, Chisinau was the city I first discovered through the eyes of a young woman, and later the place where I built my own path,” Maia Sandu said.

The head of state stressed that the capital’s development required constant efforts to leave future generations a greener city, with modern infrastructure and services that meet residents’ needs.

“We must lay one brick upon another to leave our children and grandchildren a European Chisinau—a greener city, with modern public transport, safe streets and respect for pedestrians,” the president wrote.

According to her, the capital must preserve its history and heritage while developing and moving closer to European standards.

“A European capital not only in name, but also in the way it is administered and in the quality of life it offers its people,” Maia Sandu emphasized.

At the end of her message, the president urged residents to take care of the city every day and wished the people of Chisinau a “Happy Birthday!”

On October 14, Orthodox Christians following the Old Calendar celebrate the Feast of the Holy Protection of Mother of God, known popularly as Pokrova. On this day, Chisinau celebrates its patronal feast.
