Moldova to implement MD-ALERT system
The Republic of Moldova will implement MD-ALERT public warning system. This will allow citizens to immediately receive warning messages directly on their mobile phones via communications operators’ networks in risk situations. A draft decision to this effect was approved today by the Government.
The public warning system will be used in the event of crises when the life and health of the population are endangered, such as extreme weather phenomena, major accidents or other emergencies.
According to the authorities, the implementation of a public warning system is a strategic priority for the Republic of Moldova, in the context of multiple global and regional challenges.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin, noted that the new system will contribute to better awareness of dangers, more efficient cooperation between institutions and faster interventions, including in evacuation processes and the provision of first aid.
At present, the Republic of Moldova does not have a mechanism to rapidly inform the population in situations of imminent danger, such as floods, heatwaves, extreme temperatures or heavy precipitation.
“The MD-ALERT system will allow the transmission of warning messages to the population through mobile communications networks, using modern technologies, thus ensuring rapid and direct information of people located in risk areas. This will contribute to better awareness of dangers, more efficient cooperation between institutions and faster interventions, including in evacuation processes and the provision of first aid. The implementation of the public alert system will help increase collective resilience to hazards, while actions will strengthen the response capacity of institutions, as well as the prompt and accurate informing of the population exposed to risks in the event of crises,” said Daniella Misail-Nichitin at the Government meeting.
The implementation of the “MD-ALERT” public warning system aims not only to create an efficient warning mechanism in times of crisis, but also its potential interoperability with other similar systems in the region, such as the “RO-ALERT” emergency population warning system in Romania. This will not only facilitate the protection of the population at national level, but will also contribute to strengthening regional cooperation in crisis management.
The operationalization of the system is taking place in accordance with the National Programme for the Accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU 2025–2029.
Previously, the Minister of Internal Affairs announced that the system will become operational in 2027.
